If your vehicle can benefit from gas having an octane rating above regular, then Econoctane is the app for you, helping you save with each fill-up, since oil companies typically charge a premium on merely mixing fuels, outsmart those profit hungry companies with Econoctane !
Econoctane is a tool to monitor fuel usage and octane rating, and to provide
mixing proportion of two grades of automotive gasoline to produce fuel with any desired intermediate octane level.
The application features
- user-friendly interface to make fuel computation for purchase a snap
- ability to account for left-over fuel of a different octane (from previous purchase) in the overall calculation; the recipe for any octane rating between highest and lowest grade available can be defined
- editable database to track fuel purchase and usage for as many different vehicles as required
- colourful and customizable plotting capability to help find the optimal octane mix that suits your vehicle, driving style and conditions; and to track seasonal variations
- multi-unit capable; metric, Imperial and US units can be mixed and converted
- multi-language; bilingual English and French out of the box, other language can be added by users (open format files)
- highly optimized code ensures program is compatible with virtually any Android version and devices
The value of mixing your own octane is based on the following observations:
- automotive fuel retailers will typically have only two grades of octane in storage: regular and their highest premium. Intermediate grades are produced by the distributor pump mixing those fuel types in the required proportion.
- gasoline distributor often sell those intermediate octane fuel MORE EXPENSIVELY than the resulting cost they would have if the highest and lowest grade were bought sequentially and then mixed.
- automotive gasoline is a complex mixture of different compounds, some of which can boost the octane rating while having a lower energy content; ethanol has an anti-knock index of 99, but only 2/3 the energy per unit volume of petroleum distillate. Many automotive fuels contain some ethanol, with possibly a higher proportion of it in the premium grade; in extreme cases using a higher than necessary octane mix may actually decrease fuel economy, having the dual impact of using a higher quantity of a more expensive than necessary fuel mix.
Econoctane allows motorists to compute the required proportion and purchase price for the mixing of regular fuel (low octane) with the highest (premium) available; all that is needed is to pre-authorize the value computed by Econoctane at the pump for each of the two purchases to get exactly the desired octane rating. Depending on how much automotive fuel is sold for, savings could reach 5% (e.g. mixing 50 l of desired 91 octane using regular 87 gas and 94 super premium saved $2.79 on purchase when compared with the selling price of 91 premium -- prices as of July 2017, Eastern Canada). This is money that oil companies would have pocketed as pure profit for only having a small mixing valve in the pump readjusted at the time of purchase.
